Ontario heat pump rebates could help you reduce the upfront cost of upgrading your heating and cooling. Through the Home Renovation Savings Program, eligible homeowners purchasing a qualifying cold-climate air-source heat pump can receive:
- Up to $7,500 for homes primarily heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood

How Much Could You Receive?
Your rebate depends on your existing primary heating source, qualifying equipment and the program’s calculation rules.
| Your home’s primary heating source | Maximum rebate for a qualifying cold-climate air-source heat pump |
|---|---|
| Electricity, oil, propane or wood | Up to $7,500 |
| Natural gas supplied through an eligible Enbridge Gas residential account | Up to $2,000 |
These are maximum amounts, not flat payments available to every applicant. Your proposed system’s qualifying heating capacity affects the calculation.
Ask for a quote that clearly identifies the equipment, installation cost and anticipated rebate. That gives you a practical basis for comparing your options.
Who Can Qualify for an Ontario Heat Pump Rebate?
Not having a heat pump is a starting point, but other requirements apply.
The program is intended for eligible homeowners installing their first heat pump system for space heating. Replacing an existing heat pump does not qualify.
Your property, heating source, utility connection and selected equipment must also meet the program rules. Eligible housing types include detached and semi-detached homes, row houses, townhomes and certain other residential properties.
Before scheduling installation, confirm your home and proposed system qualify.
You can review the current requirements on the official Home Renovation Savings Program heat pump page.

No Energy Assessment Required. Pre-Approval Still Comes First.
You do not need a home energy assessment for this heat pump rebate stream. However, that does not mean you can install equipment first and apply afterwards.
A participating HVAC contractor must submit your pre-installation application. Wait for written approval before installation begins. An installation completed before approval is not eligible.
After the work, the contractor submits the required post-installation documentation. Rebate payment depends on approval of that application as well.
A quote request alone does not secure funding. Start the process early so you have time to review equipment, complete the application and plan the installation.
Why Consider a Heat Pump?
If you are already planning a heating or cooling upgrade, it makes sense to compare a heat pump with your other options.
A heat pump moves heat between your home and the outdoors. It provides warmth during the heating season and cooling during warmer weather.
For your household, the appeal may include:
- Heating and cooling from one system
- An alternative to your current heating equipment
- A chance to address comfort problems as part of a planned upgrade
- Lower upfront costs through an approved rebate
The right choice depends on your property. Existing ductwork, insulation, room layout and heating needs all affect the installation plan.
If you are still weighing fuel types and equipment, start with gas furnace or heat pump: which is best and our Gree heat pump buyer’s guide.
Does a Heat Pump Replace Your Furnace?
That depends on the proposed system and the program requirements for your existing heating fuel.
Some homes use a heat pump with compatible backup heating. Others need a different configuration. Oil-heated homes have specific requirements for moving away from oil heating.
Before choosing equipment, ask:
- What will heat my home during the coldest weather?
- Can any of my existing equipment remain?
- Does the quote include all required installation work?
- What electrical or ductwork changes are needed?
- Which parts of the project qualify for the rebate?
A clear installation plan should answer those questions before work starts. Also useful: should you buy a new air conditioner or furnace if you are planning a dual-fuel or full HVAC changeout.

Ontario Heat Pump Rebate FAQs
Do all homeowners without a heat pump qualify?
No. Having no existing space-heating heat pump is one requirement. The home, primary heating source, utility connection, equipment and application must also meet the program’s criteria.
Can I get a rebate to replace an old heat pump?
No. This program does not provide rebates for replacing an existing space-heating heat pump, including an older system.
Do I automatically receive $7,500?
No. That is the maximum for eligible homeowners purchasing qualifying systems when their existing primary heating source is electricity, oil, propane or wood. The approved amount depends on the system and program rules.
Can natural gas customers apply?
Eligible Enbridge Gas residential customers can receive up to $2,000 toward the purchase of a qualifying cold-climate air-source heat pump.
Do I need approval before installation?
Yes. Your pre-installation application must receive approval before the heat pump is installed. Your contractor must also submit a post-installation application.
Can I keep my furnace?
A compatible natural gas or propane furnace may serve as backup in an eligible installation. The backup furnace itself does not qualify for the heat pump rebate. Confirm the requirements for your proposed setup before proceeding.
